The dragon boat festival also known as Tuen Ng in the Cantonese language, one of the subsidiary languages in China is a traditional holiday which originated basically from China but is being observed in some other parts of the world today alongside China herself.
Tuen Ng Festival is usually celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month on the Chinese lunar calendar which usually falls in June on the normal Gregorian calendar that governs our daily life.
This festival commemorates Qu Yuan, a respected scholar and poet from ancient China. Deeply devoted to public affairs, he ended his life by jumping into a river on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month.
To remember him, people gradually formed a host of festive traditions, among which dragon boat racing is the most well-known. According to legend, locals rowed out to search for him and threw rice into the river to stop fish and shrimp from disturbing his remains. This practice later developed into the tradition of eating rice dumplings.
