, Crazy Easter Traditions You’ve Never Heard Of

Easter is a religious holiday celebrated by people of the Christian faith. It is also known as the movable feast because its dates keep changing from year to year within the Gregorian Calendar depending on the full moon and spring equinox. This year’s Good Friday will be on 15th April, while the date for Easter Sunday will be on 17th April. The main difference between these two holy days is that on Good Friday, Jesus was crucified on the cross and was resurrected on Easter Sunday.

The early Christians started celebrating this annual festival to mark the coming back to life of the son of God. The observance of Easter celebrates the defeat of death and the hope of salvation.

Six fun Easter traditions from around the world

If you have always celebrated Easter in the same way since you were born, it can be hard imagining that people somewhere else celebrate it differently. You would be shocked to learn that different people celebrate Easter differently worldwide. Knowing how people in other places celebrate Easter is a good way to learn and understand other cultures.

Here are some of the unique Easter traditions from different parts of the globe:

  • Making giant omelets

If you’re in the southern French town of Haux on Easter Monday, bring a fork to eat this giant omelet made by the residents using 15,000 eggs. The omelet is served in the town’s main square and can feed up to 1,000 people.

  • Kite flying

People (locals and visitors alike) on the beautiful British island of Bermuda fly homemade kites on Good Friday. Go to Horseshoe beach and bring a brightly-colored kite with bold geometric designs if you’re looking to participate. Most kites are hexagonal and octagonal.

  • Making a spiritual fire

Easter fires are a common tradition in Croatia. The villagers gather around the fire, symbolizing Christ, to sing songs that celebrate the season. The fire is prepared by cutting stone on stone.

  • Putting on costumes

Young children in Sweden and Finland dress up as Easter witches and wear old clothes. They then walk around the neighborhood trading their artwork for candy, just like how it’s done during Halloween.

  • Making Bonnets

Easter bonnet parades occur in the UK, the US, and Australia. The kids build and decorate their bonnets with flowers, bunny ears, chickens, eggs, or chocolate. The competition on creativity can get pretty heated.

  • Decorating Easter trees with tobacco

This tradition is common in Papua New Guinea. The trees and branches that are right outside churches get decorated with packs of cigarettes and tobacco. These are then given to the congregates after the church service on Easter Sunday.

Three Ways to Celebrate Easter in Hong Kong

There is so much to do in Hong Kong during Easter. You can either go out or spend the Easter season indoors relaxing with friends and family. However way you decide to spend your Easter, we have some suggestions on how you can celebrate in Hong Kong:

  • Easter egg hunt

You can never get bored, especially if you have kids around during Easter. Add a little variation to your egg hunting by turning it into a treasure hunt. Provide the team with written clues to help them find the Easter eggs. The final egg can reveal a treasure of your choice.
