, Ten facts about Easter
  1. The name Easter comes from the name of a pagan fertility goddess, Ostara or Eostre. Her feast was always held on the Vernal Equinox.
  2. There is a flower called an Easter lily. It was named as such because it tended to flower in the weeks surrounding the holiday. This flower is a symbol of purity and new life. The flower’s symbolism is also significant during this part of the year because it grows from a bulb in the grown, seen as a form of rebirth – much like the story of Jesus.
  3. Did you know that Easter is the holiday with the second highest candy consumption? The first is Halloween, of course. Chocolate bunnies are among the most popular gifts given on Easter. Statistics show that more than ¾ of all people start by munching on the ears first. Still, chocolate eggs are also in high demand. Cadbury’s Crème Egg is the most popular, with more than 1.5 million produced each day in the UK. In fact, Europe is the first producer of the chocolate egg in the 1800s.
  4. Several Easter customs surround around luck. For instance, finding an egg with two yolks on Easter means you are blessed with good luck, according to legend. In some regions of the world, people leave their doors and windows open so that the sun can drive out any evil on Easter.
  5. Some countries use the term ‘Pascha’ to refer to Easter. This word comes from the word for Passover, a Jewish holiday. This is the period of time before Jesus was crucified. Additionally, the 40 days leading up to Easter are known as Lent. This is often a period of restraint for many religious followers.
  6. Billions of jelly beans are produced for Easter. The most popular color is red. It is customary in some areas to hide the egg-shaped candies inside of plastic eggs for children to find. These candies became an Easter treat in the 1930s.
  7. The first recorded Easter treat is the hot cross bun. Monks would hand out these buns, marked with crosses, to poor church goers during the period of Lent.
  8. Today, most people dye their Easter eggs with easy-to-use dye tabs. Before these were invented, people had to be more creative. Dyes were made from plants. Red onion skins, carrots, fruit juice and other foods were staples for dying.
  9. The name of the day on which Christianity asserts Jesus was crucified is known as Good Friday. This is the Friday immediately before the Easter celebration.
  10. Did you know that there are Easter eggs designed for people with visual impairments? These eggs beep and click so that children can find the eggs during the Easter egg hunt. This means that everybody gets to join in on the fun.
