During the COVID-19 lockdown period (which is the first thing that comes to mind when I hear the word ‘lockdown’), sitting in front of your television in the evening and watching as the world counted its casualties due to the pandemic was quite depressing.

     It was also quite easy to get bored during the period. I remember one long afternoon after wandering around the house looking for something to while away time, I returned to the living room and my dog was looking at me like, “See? This is why I chew the furniture”. There are, however, a lot of fun isolation activities and ideas out there that you can try out if you ever find yourself ‘locked down’ again.

For Adults

1. Try Something New

Being acutely bored is something I can totally relate to – when all your usual pastime activities do not seem to be capable of killing your boredom. Perhaps its time to find a new hobby. Perhaps there are pieces of stuff you’ve seen other people enjoy doing but you haven’t tried it out yet. You might get disappointed a few times but you might actually find something new to be obsessed with. These are some hobbies you might want to consider :

• Learn calligraphy

• Pick up needlework (knitting, crocheting etc.)

When is the best time for binge-watching tv shows and series? Lockdowns, of course! Movie freaks like me will probably agree that it’s an opportunity to catch up on missed episodes or to even pick out an entire series and start from scratch.

     If you’re tired of watching movies, you can also try listening to podcasts. There are different categories of podcasts you can try out – technology, society, self-help, religion, crime, comedy, lifestyle, storytelling, travel, gaming, fiction etc…

3. Go Online

The peculiar thing about the internet is that it caters for a vast variety of needs. If you are looking to get information, entertainment, business, marketing and a long list of others, you’ll find it on the World Wide Web.

     If you’re also looking to kill boredom, well, boredom is literally as good as dead. Here are some things you can do online when bored :

• Play games
• Rest e-books/comics
• Start a blog
• Take online quizzes/surveys
• Go on social media!

For Kids

1. Getting Creative

Keeping kids entertained can be very challenging given that they seem not to be captivated by a single activity for a long time. However, creative arts and crafts activities should keep them lovely and occupied. Examples you can help them try out include :

• Making a paper cut out family
• Choosing an inspirational quote and creating a poster
• Cutting and creating clothes for their toys using old clothes
• Creating a paper crown and decorating it etc.

It’s time to pull out the arts and crafts and get messy!

2.   Teach Them New Things

Being locked down is also an opportunity for you to teach your kids those things you’ve always wanted them to know but you’ve always been too busy to teach them. You can teach them how to cook special dishes (and maybe show them your grandmother’s recipe), sports and games. You can even teach them a new language.

3. Playing Games And Watching Cartoons

This is also splendid for kids to spend the lockdown especially if the game/cartoon is educational as you’ll get to enjoy a few moments in peace as long as they are glued to the screen. Maybe you’ll even be able to manage a quick nap. However, their screen time should be limited as kids tend to get addicted to games and television pretty easily.
