, MUST WATCH HONG KONG NEW YEAR FILMS OF ALL TIME

Once all the highly anticipated Christmas frenzy passes, that means it’s time to prep for the New Year celebrations too. We all have different New Year’s Eve plans; some spend their New Year’s Eve partying, some spend it at their place of worship while others celebrate into the New Year at their workplace. Many of us, however, prefer to spend the night at home watching cheesy, romantic New Year movies. If that sounds like your kind of party, then this article is for you. And even if you’ll be spending the night outside, you can still watch these five must-see New Year films of all time later.

FIVE FILMS TO WATCH DURING NEW YEAR

  • All’s Well, Ends Well

This Hong Kong parody keeps on living on as one of the most amazing Lunar New Year movies to grace our screens. What’s not to like about this Hong Kong classic? It’s full of witty humour, slapstick comedy, and scripts that will make you laugh out loud: a romantic comedy about the three Shang brothers celebrating Chinese New Year.

Shang Moon, the elder brother, is a greedy businessman who treats his disgusting but hard-working wife like dirt. Shang So, the eldest brother, is gay, and Shang Foon, the middle brother, is a playboy and disc jockey. Six more sequels follow the first movie.

  • It’s A Wonderful Life (1994)

Hong Kong’s It’s a Wonderful Life doesn’t have anything to do with suicidal savings and loan managers despite having the same title as the classic by Frank Capra. Leslie Cheung plays a man named Roberto in this movie, whose name is played up because it sounds like the Cantonese word for “turnip head” and he goes to visit his friend’s (or maybe more?) wealthy family (his friend is Kuan played by Teresa Mo.

While he is there, he meets her siblings, who are also having romantic issues of their own: All’s Well Ends Well Raymond Wong, who plays Kau-an’s older brother, is an alcoholic who pretends to be a nanny to reconnect with his young daughter. whereas her other brother, Tony Leung Ka-fai, is a comic book artist who has trouble speaking and falls in love with a pretty schoolteacher, Anita Yuen.

  • Shaolin Soccer (2001)

Shaolin Soccer is the kung fu-football comedy crossover from Stephen Chow’s repertoire that should be on your New Year film list because of its extreme silliness and abundance of goodwill. This is cinema at its most enjoyable and the plot itself is minimalist: A Shaolin gathers his five childhood friends to play football with their martial arts skills, spreading Shaolin kung fu. In order to compete against the all-conquering Team Evil in the National Soccer Cup, a former professional summons them to train.

  • Kung Fu Panda

This Chinese New Year, stream Kung Panda 1, 2, and 3 on Netflix, our favourite animated hero. There are a lot of laughs, well-defined characters, and lively action scenes in this happy movie. From pudgy Po’s legendary story in the main film when he, a kung fu lover, gets chosen as the Dragon Warrior and he chooses to collaborate with the Furious Five and obliterate the bad guys that compromise the Valley of Peace to him driving his little followers against the otherworldly champion Kai in the third film, this is one lighthearted antagonist movie that will keep you stuck to the screen for Chinese New Year.

  • King Of Comedy (1999)

King Of Comedy stars Stephen Chow as an actor who is committed to his art yet winds up disregarded and consigned to little jobs. He meets two women: One is a well-known actress, and the other is a determined club hostess who takes acting lessons from Chow to attract customers. Guess who he ends up with? In addition to the romance and mischief, there are numerous references to Bruce Lee and John Woo to keep you amused.
