It may be cold outside, but the anticipation of spring is in the air! This year is the year of the tiger. It’s also Chinese New Year which celebrated the beginning of a new Lunar Calendar.
…which means it’s time to find gifts for everyone on your list!
From what not to gift and what’s appropriate as a Lunar New Year gift, here is a guide to help you make the right choices.
5 Gifts You Should Never Give as Chinese New Year Gifts
Clocks & Watches
In Chinese, giving a clock sound like wishing the recipient bad luck or death, as clocks symbolize the running out of time. This is especially an uncomfortable reminder for elderlies.
Sharp Objects
Giving sharp objects is a negative omen in Chinese, as they are thought to ‘cut off’ the relationship. As a common Chinese saying goes, “one slash and it’s in two parts” means an end to a relationship between people.
Black & White Objects
As Chinese New Year gifts, objects in black and white colours are avoided because they stand as traditional colours for funerals. Giving a black or white object sounds like speaking of death, which is inappropriate in the new year.
Shoes
Shoes are a bad idea for CNY present because the word ‘shoes’ sounds (in Chinese) similarly to a word for ‘bad luck’ or ‘evil’. Avoid shoes as gifts at all costs.
Pears
Giving fruits during CNY is a good thing, except when it’s pears. In Chinese, pear sounds the same as the word for ‘parting’, so it’s considered bad luck.
5 Trendy Chinese New Year’s Gifts to Give
Tea
Tea is widely appreciated among Chinese people. It’s always a nice present to gift anyone a wrapped box of tea in the new year.
Fruits
Fruit baskets are a common and proper gift for Chinese New Year. Giving various fruits as well symbolize many good wishes.
Fancy Candies & Chocolates
Candies and chocolates are a great way to share happiness among the kids you come across in the new year.
Clothes
If you’re familiar with your hosts, you can prepare clothes as a gift for them during the Chinese New Year.
Red Envelopes
If your Chinese hosts have children, don’t forget to prepare some red envelopes for the new year.
